Calm before the storm

Go Find Yourself

Here I am. About one week away from traveling to Australia. On my own. For more than a month.

Currently I’m very calm. Perhaps because last week I went through somewhat of an exchaustion period where I wanted to do everything but didn’t have the energy to finish anything. Now everything is packed and sorted out. Almost everything. I still have to fill up my iPod with some sweet new tracks (a little gift for myself – good music can save so many boring airplane & bus rides). Surprisingly so far I’ve added Rosi Golan, Paloma Faith and LP‘s latest albums. Very mellow, melancholic and “autumn”-ish music. I guess it’s because the weather in Finland has been more like fall than summer lately. It’s winter/spring time in Australia so my choise of music is somewhat appropriate but for the beginning of the trip I think I also need some sweet beach tunes.

Got an album you would recommend for me?

Play that funky music…

Shall we talk about something else than my travel plans for a change? There’s nothing much to report about my life at the moment. Sure, summer has arrived to Finland. And we hosted the Ice Hockey World Championship games. And Eurovision Song Contest is on tv. Oh, and I’m trying hard to finish my masters thesis.. hopefully only few more weeks and it’s d.o.n.e!

Since nothing exciting is happening ;) lets talk about MUSIC. It’s my love. My life.

You can’t really say that I like a specific genre of music. But if I had to put it in one sentence I would say “melodic/orchestral rock/metal”. But you see, I simply don’t have one specific genre of music that I like – I like them all. Well, most of them. And some of them I’ve grown to love (like dubstep, ahem, that took awhile).

I think my latest “favorited” videos of YouTube give you a pretty good idea of how.. wide my music taste can be.

Avenged Sevenfold – Welcome to The Family (My latest find. Just like Dream Theater! Love the whole album)
Orealia has Orchestra – Suggestions (Pretty Little Liars has the best music!)
Keane – Hamburg Song (I’ve grown to love Keane)
OK ONE ROCK – Liar (I’ve grown out of the “visual-kei” phase and begun to like Japanese rock bands)
Max Jason Mai – Don’t Close Your Eyes (Slovakia’s Eurovision song contest entry, sweet voice!)
Greg Laswell – This Woman’s Work (I like this version so much more than Kate Bush’s orginal)

Notes
Other than listening to music I also love going to concerts and smaller gigs. I haven’t seen too many bands this year, so far: Negative, Dream Theater, Nightwish. Coming up are Metallica (Sonisphere Festival) and perhaps one other music festival during this summer. Christina Perri is coming to Finland too, but I’m not sure about that. I’ve watched some videos on YouTube and she doesn’t seem to be good at live shows. She has a finnish bass player though :P

What genre of music is your favorite?
Do you know any “weird” music genre that I should get to know? (like “ska” music or..)

Inspiration is everywhere

I’m a sponge when it comes to..life in general. I feel that every opportunity is an opportunity to take. If a friend is asking me to come and watch a movie of which I’ve never ever heard of before I usually grasp the moment and go. I don’t question the fact that the movie really isn’t the type of genre I normally watch – I just want to experience new things. Same goes with a band, concert, weekend vacation or anything else. Of course if there’s money involved I have to think for a split second before I promise to “throw my money away”. Then again, usually it’s not money down the drain because the experiences and new inspiration I get from experiencing totally “out of my world” activities are such a kick!

CSI – Episode 220 “Cats in The Cradle”

Sanders: “I’m like a sponge, I just absorb information.”
Grissom: “i thought that was MY line”
Sanders: “Yeah, and I absorbed it.”

I’ve recently chatted with a friend who I completely trust to always have good advice when I have worries or questions that I’m going over in my head. There’s always this new band or tv show that this friend can recommend to me right then and there, which just hits the spot dead on – it’s like we have the same sense of humour but also the same “deep” dark moods and the perfect medicine for such moods.

I feel very lucky to have friends who are almost all nothing like me. We are all so different, going to different schools, working on different fields, listening to different kinds of music. They make my life so rich because I’m not just stuck to that one mold but exposed to all areas of the world. I may have some thing in common with someone and another thing in common with someone else. I guess all I want to say is… friends are a bliss. And mine are more than what I could have ever wished for ♥.

So here’s a list of my recently absorbed things (some are totally me, and some I’m surprised to actually LIKE because they’re sooo different from what I usually spend my time on):

  • Adele (amazing singer, amazing music!)
  • The Reign of Kindo (jazz, blues, rock band for those mellow days)
  • ♥ Kim Hyun Joong “Break Down” (love the dancing!)
  • QI (a hilarious and intelligent british comedy show)
  • The Pretty Reckless (this 16-year old’s angst is something I can sometimes relate to)

Have you found something “new” lately? Perhaps a song, person, clothing brand, style… that you thought you’d never ever like/listen to/wear but to your surprise – you do now.
